Cosy Christmas spirit
If you are looking for atmospheric open-air events, you will find plenty in Munich in winter. The world-famous Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz is not the only place to get into the Christmas spirit – the Viktualienmarkt, the Christmas village at the Munich Residenz and the Haidhausen Christmas market, which is only a 10-minute walk away, also have a festive atmosphere. The queer LGBTQ* community’s Pink Christmas market in the Glockenbachviertel district is cosmopolitan, opulent and romantically pink.
The Tollwood Winter Festival on the Theresienwiese attracts visitors with over 660 events and a lavish New Year’s Eve party. A visit to the traditional Krampus run at the Christmas market and a taste of the delicious Feuerzangenbowle at the historic bunker are a must for everyone, not just Munich residents, during the winter season. Munich attracts active vacationers and nature lovers in winter with a wide range of options: enjoy curling on the Nymphenburg Canal, take a stroll through the English Garden or keep in shape with cross-country skiing on one of the numerous urban trails. Skaters will also find everything their heart desires at Lake Wiesinger, at the Ice Magic event in Munich’s old town or at the ice disco in the SAP garden.
And if you want to combine a winter city break with some urban toboggan run, you can do so on the Olympiaberg. If it’s too cold for you, you can always watch the locals ice-bathing at Grünwalder Bridge with a warming mulled wine in your hands. JAMS excursion tip: Longing for a rustic, white winter wonderland?
